Our transition to 2 Kings is a reminder of God’s majestic power extending from heaven to earth for humanity to bear witness. Just as “Enoch walked with God: and he was not, for God took him” (Genesis 5:24) Elijah is preparing for his whirlwind ascension and his successor, Elisha, is determined not to miss the moment. When Elijah asks what he can do before he is taken away “Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.” (2 Kings 2:9)
2 Kings continues with a demonstration of this request fulfilled as Elisha would perform twice as many miracles as Elijah. Unfortunately, 2 Kings doesn’t continue this miraculous posture but instead there is a shift in tone as the reign of the remaining kings is on displayed as the people are headed into captivity because they turned from the living God who had delivered them and brought them to the other side and fallen into the curse of Deuteronomy 28.
This is a warning to all humanity, we can have miracles, signs and wonders surrounding us; great deliverances and success, but the moment that we turn from serving the true and living God we become subject to our fallen nature and will endure the consequences.
