The name Lamentations gives us an expressed idea of what this five-chapter book is about. The prophetic exegesis continues to foreshadow the destruction of Jerusalem as a broken vessel whose sins have caused them to be separated from God. Instead of his mighty right hand bringing deliverance, his hand is executing judgment for the spiritual adultery and breaking of God’s commandments.
Although it may seem that the wicked go unpunished, the just judge is keeping an accurate record and after extending a time of repentance, the judgment is set. In this case, Jerusalem would be destroyed and the people taken captive for seventy years. This is important because there is a set time when the debt of sin will be paid and the guilty party released from captivity.
Humanity being subject to sin because of the fall faces this dilemma where we are sentenced or suffering the consequences of our sins until we come to our day of repentance and accept Jesus Christ as Our Lord and Savior, who died for our sins and not only paid our debt in full but served out our sentence of death by conquering death, hell and the grave.
As you read Lamentations, weep not over what has past but receive the free gift of salvation and rejoice in the joy of the Lord forevermore.
